B.C.'s new motorcycle laws came into effect on Friday, including new rules which make the old "beanie" or "skullcap" helmets illegal.
Starting June 1 motorcycle riders and passengers will be required to wear helmets with a Snell M2005, Snell 2010, ECE or DOT rating.
RCMP say they will be conducting an education campaign in June, but come July 1, any rider without a legal helmet could also get a $138 ticket.
The new regulations also say all passengers must be able to reach foot pegs or floorboards and children who cannot reach the foot rests will not be allowed to ride as passengers.
According to the Ministry of Justice, there are about 42 rider deaths in B.C. every year, and more than 200 motorcyclists have died since 2007.
