Stephen G. Bennett II died Memorial Day, May 31, in Gloucester, Massachusetts. He died almost instantly as a result of injuries sustained from a T-bone collision with a UPS truck. He was on his way to get a state inspection sticker for his motorcycle
He was less than a quarter mile from his apartment and his wife Tammy Bennett and his 12-year-old son Hunter “Bubba” Bennett were following the husband and father as he rode. So, they witnessed the collision. His wife immediately stopped and attempted to administer first aid to her husband. “I ran out of my car and tried to find a pulse,” she told Richard Gaines of the Gloucester Times. She unsuccessfully administered mouth-to-mouth resuscitation then comforted the UPS driver.
According to the Gloucester Times the male driver approached Tammy Bennett as she stood over her husband’s lifeless body and said, “Please don’t hate me. I’m so sorry.” According to the paper, she hugged the driver and told him she forgave him. She later told Gaines, “For the UPS driver, it’s such a horrible, horrible thing, How can I hate somebody who has to live with this for the rest of his life?”

Stephen Bennett II was born in Pontiac, Illinois on January 6, 1969. He attended high school in Pontiac and Streator, Illinois and graduated from Kankakee Community College. He met his wife in high school. They married when he was 19 and she was 18. They both loved motorcycles. He was a machinist by trade.The couple survived in the dying blue collar town of Streator from 1992 until 2001 when Bennett found a job with Gloucester Engineering in Gloucester. By then the couple had four children and their first home in Massachusetts was in a campground. When he was downsized at Gloucester Engineering he found a new job with a defense contractor named Ophir Optics in distant North Andover, Massachusetts.
He loved football, hunting, his family and riding his motorcycle.

Stephen G. Bennett II is survived by his wife; his daughters Ashleigh and Alyssa Bennett, his two sons Stephen G. Bennett III and Hunter; his father who lives in Pontiac; his mother, Mary Lou Casey of Flanagan, Illinois; three sisters, Stephanie Bennett, Dawn Bennett and Cheri DeRossett; and three brothers, J. Wesley Bennett, Aaron J. Bennett and Sean Bennett.There will be a viewing tomorrow, June 11, from 3 p.m. until 6 p.m. followed by a memorial service at the Winterrowd Funeral Home in Streator. He will be buried Tuesday at the Hillcrest Memorial Park in Streator.
Stephen G. Bennett II lived a hard life cheerfully. He died with his boots on and many women will weep for him. He was just 43.
