Wear A Helmet, Police Are Watching
The Omaha police department have gotten a grant to enforce motorcycle helmet compliance in the city.
The Nebraska Office of Highway Safety has awarded additional funding to provide extra officers on the streets to ensure motorcyclists are compliant with Nebraska state laws regarding motorcycle helmets.
Nebraska state law specifies that protective helmets that meet the United States Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard #218 are required for all operators and passengers of a motorcycle or moped.
The protective helmet must be secured properly with a chinstrap on the head of the operator and /or passenger while the motorcycle or moped is in motion. The helmet shall consist of lining, padding, chinstrap, and shall meet or exceed the U.S. D.O.T. Standard #218.
Officers will be looking for cyclists who are not wearing a helmet or wearing a helmet that doesn't meet U.S. D.O.T. standards.
They'll also have an eye out for vehicle violations that make situations dangerous for motorcycle operators, such as fail to yield, speeding, improper lane changes, or violating traffic signals.
The operations are scheduled to run at various times of day and locations during the peak motorcycle riding season, which is during summer months.
