Gulf Coast celebrates
Mississippi Navy Week begins today with events on the Coast to give residents an opportunity to meet sailors and learn about the Navy’s mission and broad-ranging capabilities.
All businesses are encouraged to use their marquees and store fronts to display messages of support.
The Keesler Air Show will feature the Navy Blue Angels this weekend.
There will be a poker run today, registration begins at 10 a.m. at the Armed Forces Motorcycle Club Clubhouse at 11007 Wolf River Road in Gulfport.
On Monday, mayoral proclamations will be signed in Gulfport, Long Beach and Biloxi.
Members of the pre-commissioning unit Mississippi, a Virginia-class submarine named after the state, will be on hand at several events along the coast including the proclamation signings.
The Navy band New Orleans will perform at schools and sailors will read to students this week.
A Navy Appreciation Parade will be in Gulfport on Friday beginning at 6 p.m. at Hardy Court Shopping Center on Courthouse Road. The parade will go south on Courthouse then east on 16th Street and north on Tegarden. Sponsorships are available. Call Lisa Bradley at 575-7794 or Rebecca Kajdan at 868-5810.
n Events wrap up with Seabee Day 2011 on March 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport. The public is asked to enter through Pass Road gate. The event will include a 5K run, a skydiving team, a vehicle show, free games and carnival rides, food and vendors.
n The 2011 Navy Week season will also help commemorate the centennial of Naval aviation, which is a year-long celebration with a variety of commemorative events planned across the country.
