Two members of the Rock Machine motorcycle gang were arrested Tuesday after Winnipeg police stopped a taxi at 11:30 p.m. on Academy Road near Niagara Street.
Both men, who were not identified by police, were wanted on outstanding warrants, said police spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen.
The men were arrested shortly after leaving a Wellington Crescent restaurant, which had been under surveillance by the police organized crime unit.
“We had a certain level of police presence in the area,” said Michalyshen.
Police seized a small amount of marijuana and an undisclosed amount of cash from the men, who also lost their gang colours — vests with the gang’s insignia.
According to tradition, the vests will be burned if the clothing is later returned to the gang members.
A 29-year-old man, wanted on four outstanding warrants, was detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre. The other gang member, aged 40, also with an outstanding warrant, was charged with possession of marijuana and failure to comply with a recognizance. He was released on a promise to appear in court. Both accused are from Winnipeg.
