Fatal police shooting used to educate law enforcement
The Southern Poverty Law Center has produced a powerful law
enforcement training video warning about the extreme views of
sovereign citizens.
The video, posted on YouTube.Com, features extensive use of the
graphic video taken during the May shoot-out between
Springfield-native Jerry Kane, his son Joe, and two West Memphis,
Ark., police officers.
The two officers were killed — Brandon Paudert and Bill Evans — and
two others were wounded before the Kanes were killed in a shoot-out in
a Wal-Mart parking lot.
The video, posted this week, educates officers about how
anti-government views espoused by Kane have become more common among
so-called “sovereign citizens.”
Sovereign citizens believe the federal government has no authority
over them and often use facetious documents, identification cards and
legal arguments to resist local law enforcement.
The Southern Poverty Law Center is an Atlanta-based organization that
tracks and educates about hate crimes.
