SACRAMENTO, CA - Authorities say pending a full investigation, a teenage driver may face charges of felony hit and run and vehicular manslaughter in a collision involving a motorcyclist on northbound Highway 99 Tuesday morning.
According to California Highway Patrol Officer Michael Bradley, at 9:55 a.m., a maroon Mercury Sable driven by the teen struck the highway center median by the 47th Avenue exit, over-corrected and struck a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.
The motorcycle rider was thrown from his bike and sustained major head trauma, Bradley said. The victim, who was from Elk Grove, was transported to an area hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. His name has not yet been released.
The teen driver fled on foot from the crash, Bradley said. CHP officers found the youth at his home in Sacramento County. He was detained and questioned before being released to his sister. His name has not been released because he is a minor.
Bradley said neither alcohol nor drugs appeared to have played a part in the collision.
Bradley said the car the teen was driving was not registered to him.
The three right lanes of 99 were reopened to traffic at 11:24 a.m.
