THOUSANDS of motorcyclists will this weekend make a sombre journey to the place they once considered their playground to honour Victoria’s bushfire victims.
Ride for the Hills organisers expect up to 7000 motorbikes of all shapes and sizes to thunder through Melbourne’s streets en route to Whittlesea, raising up to $150,000 for the cause.
“The areas affected by the fires are basically the playground of motorbike riders so it has been said that we owe a debt to the Yarra Ranges,” Ride for the Hills chairman Phillip Cassap said.
“When we saw Maryville burning on the Sunday (February 8), we immediately decided it would be wrong for us not to get involved.”
Mr Cassap said that, as well as raising money, the event would be an opportunity for motorbike enthusiasts to check out a huge range of exotic machinery.
“It will be everything from scooters, to sport bikes, tourers, cruisers, trikes, spiders and postie bikes,” he said.
Organisers hope to meet their fundraising target through the $20 entry fees and $10,000 worth of prizes to give away and raffle.
Participants will assemble at Pier Rd, St Kilda, at 8am on Sunday. The ride will leave at 11am and arrive at Whittlesea under police escort after noon.
