(UK) Westminster Rebel Motorcycle Club 'run CCTV car out of town'

OFF THE WIRE
A troupe of biker road warriors are taking on Westminster Council's army of CCTV smart cars.

The borough deny that a new fleet of vehicles with four-foot high protruding cameras are there to generate revenue, rather "to monitor road safety problem areas" and complement Civil Enforcement Officers.

Beleaguered bikers in the area disagree and are giving fellow motorists a helping hand to spot the 'spies'. In a Ministry of Information style You Tube video the group run a CCTV smart car 'out of town' donning yellow florescent jackets.

Westminster Council Colin Barrow perhaps had something else in mind when he called for an "army of volunteers” as part of the Living City initiative to help the state to "develop and deliver local services which had their roots in community provision" .

Nutsville, a site dedicated to "highlighting corruption, deceit and plain old incompetence in local London councils", have set about encouraging, if not directly organising, an army of volunteer bikers to ensure that the smart cars do not over-step the mark and start generating revenue.

Westminster say the CCTV cars are out to "enforce both moving traffic contraventions and parking contraventions through the capture of moving images".

One supporter, dingolovethrob, wrote "Superbly done, it's a great way of making a real difference to the councils intention to say one thing and then do another."

Motorcyclists are already fuming at the local authorities £1-a-day parking charge that resulted in a bitter High Court battle, which they lost.

Councillor Lee Rowley, Westminster council's cabinet member for parking, said:

"The council's two CCTV cars both have 15 foot cameras and large signage to make them clearly visible and easy for motorists to spot, so I'm not sure that this is the best use of the motorcyclists' time.
