News item: The Governor's Advisory Committee on Motorcycle Safety will meet on Friday to discuss the possibility of conducting a statewide public opinion survey on the topic of lane sharing, lane splitting and lane filtering.
Question 1: Do you know what lane sharing is? Lane splitting? Lane filtering?
Question 2: Are you stupid?
Question 3: Assume that these terms refer to the ways motorcyclists could legally thread their way through lines of stationary cars and trucks at points of traffic congestion. Do you approve of this idea?
Question 4: Why not?
Question 5: If lane-splitting, lane-filtering and lane-sharing were legalized in Oregon, would you be more likely to ride a motorcycle, thus reducing congestion and improving the environment?
Question 6: What are you afraid of?
Question 7: If you don't ride a motorcycle, would you be likely to open your car door to impede a motorcyclist whizzing past your stationary vehicle?
Question 8: How about opening your window to throw a Slurpee in a motorcycle's path?
Question 9: If you are a motorcyclist and you find yourself racing past stationary vehicles, can you promise not not to sport obscene tattoos, decals or patches and not to rev your throttle in contempt?
Question 10: And when you're speeding by, can you avoid getting all righteous about being on two wheels, unlike some people we could name?
Question 11: Do you understand that riding a motorcycle is inherently risky and that riders should always wear helmets and protective gear?
Question 12: But that's not going to stop you, is it?
Question 13: Do you think that the Governor's Advisory Committee on Motorcycle Safety serves an important purpose?
