Police said a Marlborough man identified in court records as a member of the Hells Angels was wearing an unlicensed, loaded .40-caliber handgun in a shoulder holster when an officer patted him down after a traffic stop Thursday night.
Jason A. Cavooto, 35, was not licensed to carry the Sig Sauer, Detective Martha Shea said yesterday.
"At any time, anything could have gone wrong," Shea said. "That's a very dangerous situation for officers."
Police pulled Cavooto over for allegedly speeding. They searched him as a precaution because he appeared nervous, Shea said.
The weapon is classified as a large-capacity gun because it can hold a magazine with more than 10 rounds. The gun had a loaded magazine, Shea said.
Cavooto, of 55 Essex St., is charged with carrying a firearm without a license, carrying a loaded large-capacity firearm on a public way and possessing a firearm/ammunition without FID/license, police said.
At his arraignment in Marlborough District Court yesterday, Cavooto posted the $5,000 bail ordered by Judge Michael Madaus, court records said. He is due back in court Dec. 27.
