Beverly — A Beverly member of the Red Devils motorcycle gang has been charged with numerous offenses, including threatening a police officer, following an incident that took place Friday, Nov. 5 in downtown Beverly.

Beverly Police Public Information Officer April Clarizia said a police officer was working a construction detail at the corner of Cabot and Beckford streets Friday around 2:30 p.m. when he heard a motorcycle roaring up behind him. The motorcycle operator, who was wearing a red facemask, she said, skirted the stopped vehicles and drove into the work area that had been cordoned off. He stopped within about 4 feet from the officer.

When the officer asked him what he was doing, Clarizia said, the motorcycle operator said that since the officer’s back was turned he just kept driving. The officer asked the driver to shut the motorcycle off, take off his mask and show his license and registration. The driver took his mask off and the officer recognized him as a Red Devils gang member, Miles Hale, 45, of 202 manor Road, with whom Beverly Police have had previous dealings.

Clarizia said Hale started backing up, as if to leave the area, and the officer called for backup. Eventually, the driver shut off the engine but continued backing up. The officer told him several times to stop, Clarizia said, but Hale refused and said, “I’m going to go wherever the [expletive] I want.”

The officer then told Hale he was under arrest and removed him from the bike.

While being transported and again during booking, Hale threatened to kill the officer, Clarizia said.

Hale is charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, failing to stop for a police officer, threatening a police officer, threatening to commit a crime, a violation of the city ordinance on knives and weapons and failing to use care in operating his motorcycle.
