CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- A man is dead and his female passenger was taken to the hospital after an early morning motorcycle crash in the Chula Vista area.
San Diego Police detectives said the man, identified as 55-year-old Donnie Gordon, is a documented associate of the Hell's Angels. Police said Gordon is from Imperial Beach.
A passing bicyclist saw the headlight of the motorcycle off the bike path around 4:50 a.m. near the intersection of Main Street and Industrial Boulevard, according to police.
It is unclear why the motorcycle was on the bike path, considering it is restricted for bicycle and pedestrian use only.
"It's fenced off. It's a good road to ride on," said bicyclist Fred Stearley. "I haven't seen motorcycles on it at all and I ride it about 3 times a week."
"Exactly why the motorcyclist chose to ride on the bike path, we're at a loss to say right now. Hopefully, the investigation might lead us to those facts," said Sgt. Leonard Flake of the SDPD Traffic Division.
Medics declared Gordon dead at the scene. The woman was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital. Police said she suffered a hip fracture.
At this point, speed does not appear to be a factor, police said. However, the motorcycle did crash alongside the fence and landed in an embankment. There was visible damage to the chain linked fence, and police are still investigating why the motorcycle veered off the pathway.
