The Eureka Police Department is expanding regular traffic enforcement operations, thanks to a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, the department announced Sunday.
The Selective Traffic Enforcement Program grant will allow for new purchases and special enforcement measures aimed at reducing the number of deaths in traffic collisions. More than 3,000 people died in traffic-related incidents in California last year, according to the press release, 950 from alcohol-related collisions.
The grant activities will specifically target speeding violators, DUI offenders, drivers with suspended or revoked licenses, red light running and seat belt violations. EPD will also increase motorcycle safety operations and will crack down on traffic violations made by motorcyclists.
