MONTREAL - Four police officers working in the Montreal region have reportedly been arrested and questioned in connection with the severe beating of another officer in Mexico in January 2011.
According to several media reports early Friday, two officers working for the Longueuil police department and two others employed by the Montreal police force were taken into custody on Wednesday and Thursday.
All have reportedly been released without charge.
Spokespersons for the Montreal and Longueuil police forces were not immediately available to comment on Friday morning.
The officers are alleged to have ties to the beating of another Montreal police officer in the popular resort town of Playa del Carmen, near Cancun, Mexico.
The officer had been vacationing with five other Montreal officers and two from the Sureté du Québec when the incident took place on Jan. 9, 2011. He suffered head trauma and a broken jaw.
Two men, Marc-André Lachance and Shane Kenneth Maloney, were later arrested and charged in connection with the beating. Both men are alleged to have links to the Hells Angels biker gxxg.
It is not clear why Montreal police are now questioning the four local officers, or if any of the people reportedly arrested this week were in Mexico when the beating occurred.
