NYPD Cop Arrested For Raping Woman At Gunpoint In Inwood

OFF THE WIRE
An off-duty New York City police officer was arrested Friday after allegedly raping a woman at gunpoint, NY1 reports.
Police responded to the scene after a resident of Park Terrace West in Inwood called 911 around 6:45AM.
One neighbor, who asked to have his name withheld due to safety concerns, said he saw what appeared to be a man and woman outside his window having sex after waking up to loud noises.
When he confronted the man, saying, “Dude, I live here,” the suspect responded by holding up his hand, saying, "Just give me a minute."
The witness said he then noticed the suspect, who flashed a badge at some point, holding a gun to the woman's head. The witness then called the police.
The woman, who is in her 20's, was on her way to work when the cop, also in his 20's, stopped her, The New York Daily News reports. He asked for directions and demanded she take him where he wanted to go. When she refused, he took out his gun and forced her into a courtyard of a building on Park Terrace West.
The officer is in custody but has not been charged and the woman is being interviewed by detectives in the special victim's unit.
The alleged incident comes a few months after a spree of sexual assaults in Inwood, Washington Heights and the Upper West Side.
It also comes just weeks after two other New York City police officers, acquitted of rape, were sentenced for official misconduct after a woman in the Lower East Side alleged she was raped by two cops in her apartment.
Overall crime in the 34th Precinct, where the incident took place, is up nearly 23 percent as of Aug. 7, according to NYPD crime statistics.
Rape was up more than 27 percent, with 14 incidents so far this year, compared to 11 in the same time period last year.
