Bandung. Police are investigating a wild clash between two rival motorcycle gangs at a coffee shop in Bandung that left six injured on Sunday.
The incident allegedly saw dozens of men from the Bikers Brotherhood motorcycle group face off against members of the Southland MG group at the Aceh Cie Rasa Loom cafe early on Sunday morning.
A spokesman for the Bikers Brotherhood, Reza Pamungkas, said that Sunday’s incident was triggered by an event involving a group member on Friday.
“One of our members was attacked by 10 men at an entertainment center in Bandung on Friday,” Reza said.
“He was badly wounded. We sent our men to clarify the matter, but they [Southland] might have thought that we were there to attack them. We would be stupid to attack them in the open, with all our colors on,” Reza said on Sunday night.
“If we really wanted to attack we would not have our colors on. We want Bandung to be secure.”
Adj. Comr. Philemon Ginting, chief of the Lengkong police sub-precinct, said that no arrests had been made over the attack.
“We have interrogated 10 people, including witnesses and victims,” Philemon said. “Most of them know the attackers. We are tracking them down.”
A worker at the cafe, T. Ibra, explained that 40 members of the Southland motorcycle group first gathered at the coffee shop at 11 p.m. on Saturday.
“By midnight they were asked to disperse,” Ibra said. “A police patrol came and made sure that they were kicked out of the coffee shop. We did not want any trouble,” he added.
“However at 1:30 a.m. seven members of the Southland gang came back and ordered food. As they were eating, 200 members of another gang arrived.
“Around 50 entered our shop and immediately attacked six of the other gang. Then everything turned to chaos,” Ibra said. “They destroyed everything, even a small charity box.
“Our cashier machine and the cigarette display was destroyed; all glass cutlery was broken. They broke seven tables and 20 chairs,” he said.
“Knives, bottles, chairs. All were used against the six from Southland,” Ibra explained.
“All of our staff were able to escape. Within 10 minutes 40-50 officers from the Bandung police and Lengkong subprecinct came and chased after the attackers. They all ran away,” he said.
Ibra said that Southland members had previously been banned from using the coffee shop as a hangout.
Meanwhile Obi, a member of Southland, said he was one of the six victims. He sustained a knife wound to the back of his head and had 11 stitches to show for it. He also lost a tooth.
“At the cafe there were eight people, including the six of us. We were just eating. And look where it got us,” Obi said.
Among his friends, Firman suffered the most severe injuries.
“Firman’s two fingers nearly came off. He received facial wounds as well,” Obi said.
“We are not from a gang. Please don’t call us that,” he said.
“We are a group. The Southland group. We are a splinter group from Bikers Brotherhood,” Obi said.
