GREENVILLE, AL (WSFA) - A Montgomery Police officer has resigned after getting into trouble with the law for the second time in two months. Officer Kyle McKenzie was arrested by Lowndes County Sheriffs deputies Thursday for alleged reckless driving on a motorcycle.
McKenzie is the same officer who in July fired a weapon into the air at a Millbrook area pub.
Greenville Police Chief Lonzo Ingram says 911 dispatch received a call Thursday about two motorcycles driving recklessly on Interstate 65 North. A Greenville police officer drove to Exit 128 and clocked the motorcycles, driven by McKenzie and another man named Randall Blake Copeland, at speeds said to be 90 mph and 115mph.
Ingram said when his officer activated his lights and sirens the motorcycles increased their speed and a chase was started. That chase ended near the I-65 rest area north of Greenville when the pursuing officer's supervisor determined it to be unsafe to continue. Chief Ingram said Lowndes County officers picked up the case when the motorcycles exited I-65 in that jurisdiction.
The Lowndes County Sheriff's Office confirmed involvement in the case, saying deputies found the motorcycles when the suspects stopped at the Chevron station in Fort Deposit near the 141 mile marker. From there, Lowndes County deputies reported chasing the suspects for another 10 miles to North Letohatchee at mile marker 151. Deputies reported to the S.O. that the suspects were passing cars using the emergency lane.
Investigators say McKenzie and Copeland got off Exit 151 onto Highway 97 and were captured at the Marathon gas station. It was while arresting the men that sheriff's deputies discovered McKenzie was a police officer, himself.
The men were charged with Reckless Driving and Attempt to Elude, though deputies said charges are neither misdemeanors nor felonies. Both men are being held in the Lowndes County Jail. Once released, both will be taken to the Greenville Jail where they'll be charged with the same crimes.
Greenville Police impounded both motorcycles.
When contacted for comment, Montgomery Police Department spokesman Captain Keith Barnett said his office had been contacted about an off-duty officer's involvement, though he did not identify the officer by name. The Montgomery Police Department's Internal Affairs Division is looking into the matter, Barnett said, adding that personnel matters are not disclosed to the public.
