Mildura police won't tolerate bikie gangs

Police at Mildura say they are closely monitoring a recent rise in activity from members of outlaw motorcycle gangs.

Mildura officers arrested a wanted member of a biker gang from South Australia at the weekend, and the Rebels Motorcycle club has recently established a chapter in Mildura.

Inspector Simon Clemence says police are giving a clear message the bikers are not welcome.

He says police locked down Lime Avenue and drew their firearms to arrest 35-year-old Peter Raymond Masters on Sunday.

"This is a really good example of good police work," he said.

"This guy gave a false name [and] we had nothing to indicate it was a false name other than the member's gut feeling that he wasn't telling the truth.

"They had no idea who he was but they had enough ... street smarts about them to go out and make those inquires and get some information and eventually they ended up with a picture of him and they realised who they had."

Inspector Simon Clemence says bikers who arrive in the region and do the wrong thing face the wrath of police.

Masters has been remanded in custody and South Australian police are expected to apply for his extradition when he returns to court this morning.
