Louisiana, Man is shot dead while riding motorcycle near Bywater

A 34-year-old man riding a motorcycle was fatally shot Saturday night near Bywater, New Orleans police said.

The victim was riding on Marais Street near Louisa Street when he was shot several times about 9:30 p.m., said Officer Hilal Williams, a police spokeswoman.

At least one of the bullets struck the man's head, and paramedics pronounced him dead on the scene, said Jeb Tate, New Orleans Emergency Medical Services spokesman.

Williams said the victim was not wearing a helmet. He apparently died from the gunshots, not from falling off the motorcycle after he was hit.

Coroner's chief investigator John Gagliano said the man's identity was not available late Saturday.
