MRF pitches in to pass Michigan helmet law rewrite
Ken Bingenheimer, Motorcycles Examiner November 10, 2011 -
A revision of Michigan's motorcycle helmet law appears likely to make it to Gov. Rick Snyder's desk and the Motorcycle Riders Foundation (MRF) is doing its part to help push the legislation forward. The MRF today passed along to its members an appeal from ABATE of Michigan that riders from outside Michigan contact Snyder arguing that Michigan loses money from riders who avoid the state because they do not want to be forced to wear helmets.
Senate Bill 291 would still require that riders under 21 wear helmets, but would allow older riders to skip the lid provided that they either have at least two years riding experience or have taken a certified motorcycle safety course. They would also be required to have at least a $20,000 medical insurance policy in effect. The Senate passed such a measure earlier in the year, and the House recently passed a slightly different version. The bill is now back in the Senate and if the Senate accepts and approves the bill as it came from the House it will go to the governor.
