AUSTRALIA - Hit-and-run death: Hells Angel member charged

OFF THE WIRE
A WELL-known Hells Angels member has been arrested and charged over the death of a man found on the side of a road on the outskirts of Darwin.

Nicholas Frank "Shonky" Cassidy was last night charged for the hit-and- run and with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

Charged ... Nicholas Frank Cassidy.

Police believe the 47-year-old builder was driving a ute which struck Levi "Leafy" Griffiths, 25, and dumped his body about 1km from the crash scene.

A 36-year-old man has also been arrested for allegedly misleading a police investigation.

Detect ive Superintendent Jamie Chalker said yesterday the police investigation was not one of murder.

The body of Mr Griffiths was found on the side of a service road, off Stuart Highway, at Coolalinga on June 4.

Police believed he was run over on Girraween Rd, Howard Springs - about 1km away.

They seized a silver, paint-smeared Ford flat-tray ute, with smashed windscreen and missing bumper, from a Berrimah business on June 23. The Hells Angels' clubhouse near the crash scene was also raided yesterday.

Supt Chalker said police were looking for evidence linking the ute with the clubhouse.

Mr Cassidy was arrested in Jingili yesterday morning.

The 36-year-old man - not a Hells Angels member - was arrested in Darwin City yesterday.

Late last night police charged him with conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.

Supt Chalker said police were confident Mr Griffiths was not a member of the outlaw bikie gang.

"Levi died as a result of a collision with a motor vehicle," he said.

"We will be alleging that the actions (the offenders) have taken have been an attempt to mislead a police investigation.

" (Moving the body) is something we will be alleging."
