MASSAPEQUA, N.Y. — Long Island cop killed by friendly fire..

OFF THE WIRE
A Nassau County, N.Y., police officer apparently was shot dead accidentally by another cop Saturday evening in the fatal pursuit of a suspect wielding "big Rambo-type knives," local media reported.
Officials told the New York Daily News that officers gunned down the 27-year-old suspect after he lunged at police instead of dropping his weapons as ordered.
The suspect was killed in the home he shared with his parents across the street from an MTA train station, Newsday said.
The area was near 54th Avenue and Front Street, officials told WNBC.
Police and MTA officers trapped the suspect in the home after responding to a report that a blade-carrying man was walking the streets in Massepequa Park and slicing up cars, authorities and witnesses said.
Witnesses told the Daily News the man was wearing all black with a white mask.
After the suspect was shot about 8:20 p.m. ET, a Nassau County cop stepped inside the home.
An MTA officer, standing near the door, saw the gun and shot the cop in the face.
"It was friendly fire," a source told the Daily News.
Crews rushed the officer to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow, where he was pronounced dead at 9:19 p.m.
Massapequa Park is about 40 miles east of Manhattan.
It is the second line-of-duty death of a Nassau County officer so far this year.
Highway patrolman Michael Califano was killed Feb. 5 when a truck slammed into his police cruiser in Old Westbury, N.Y.
