Does your helmet comply with state law?

CARTERET COUNTY, N.C.- North Carolina Highway Patrol says if you helmet doesn't meet Department of Transportation specifications, you're in violation of the state helmet law.
“In some events depending on the severity of the crash it may make a difference whether you have head trauma and some instances, injuries may end up fatal depending on the type of helmet you have on," said Trooper M.A. Riggs with Highway Patrol.

That’s because unlike popular novelty helmets, DOT approved helmets are designed with safety in mind and have been through extensive crash testing.  .

“There are four different components to [DOT approved] helmets, and those four components work in unison to absorb that energy from that impact and take it away from the head and the brain so it reduces injuries, said Eddie Foster, who teaches motorcycle safety in Craven and Carteret counties.

Even though they don't meet the specifactions for North Carolina's helmet law, many bikers prefer the comfort of novelty or beanie style helmets.  Experts say the right type of helmet could be the difference between life and death.
