Florida- Can't legislate intelligence....

OFF THE WIRE
By DAN PRICE, Port Orange
The Daytona Beach News-Journal
I'm responding to the Nov. 29 editorial from The Gainesville Sun about motorcycle helmets.
One cannot argue the fact that a motorcycle accident without a helmet is more likely to result in serious head injury than when one is worn. However, this editorial is a really good example of how figures can be selectively used to "prove" a position.
This editorial claims a doubling of fatal motorcycle accidents because of helmet law changes. What if failed to mention is that the number of motorcycles in the United States also doubled between 1997 and 2006 ( the latest figures I could find). It also failed to mention that the majority of the fatalities involve sport bikes, young males, risky driving practices and speed.
It would be far more effective in saving lives to reduce risky behavior and speeding than to require we responsible riders wear a helmet. After all, a motorcycle traveling at 100 mph hitting a car broadside or running off the road will undoubtedly have fatal results, regardless of helmet use.
It doesn't do much good to protect the brains of a person who refuses to use them.
