Canada - Trial date set for alleged Hells Angels member

A man RCMP allege is a member of the Hells Angels has had a new trial date set on several charges.
Leonard John Desjarlais, 37, of Red Deer was set to have a trial on Feb. 9 in Red Deer provincal court but a piece of information from a police expert has yet to be delivered to the defence. so the trial was adjourned, court heard Thursday.
Desjarlais will now be tried Aug. 5 on charges relating to the Nov. 25, 2009, discovery of a large amount of cash in a furnace in a vacant house.
Desjarlais is charged with one count of possession of proceeds obtained by crime, two counts of uttering forged documents and two counts of unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon.
Defence lawyer Jake Chadi of Edmonton said the trial is expected to last a day.
Red Deer city RCMP were contacted on Nov. 25, 2009, when a repairman discovered a “large sum” of cash in the furnace of a vacant house in Red Deer’s Michener Hill area.
Police said earlier that Desjarlais approached police claiming to be the owner of the money, and while attempting to prove it belonged to him, allegedly committed fraud.
When police searched the home, they found the money stashed in a furnace.
The money is believed to be connected to the drug trade. Mounties also found illegal weapons and documents in the home.
Using a search warrant, police also seized documents, data, two prohibited weapons and the cash.
RCMP said earlier the accused is a local Hells Angels Nomads member.
