Motorcycling And Using Marijuana. As of January 2016, 23 states and the District of Columbia allow marijuana for medical use, and 4 states – Alaska, Colorado, Oregon, Washington as well as DC – allow it for recreational use by adults 21 and over. Still, even in those states, it is not legal and considered unsafe to operate any motor vehicle while impaired by marijuana because of the risk of distorted perception of time, space, and speed. To raise awareness regarding riding a motorcycle while under the influence of the medical and/or recreational drug, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation is producing an educative “Marijuana Awareness Kit’ to explain the risks of impairment. This kit will be available for purchase in February and can be used by anyone interested in being a facilitator for special events, riding club meetings and rallies, and community outreach programs. No certification from MSF or prior experience as a teacher is required. With this kit, participants to the educative program will get a sense of the challenges a “high” motorcyclist would face when dealing with traffic or road emergency situations.
