It is officially spring. Flowers are blooming, summer is coming, and love and motorcycles are in the air.
Rick Waggoner, 51, has been riding motorcycles as long as he can remember. Waggoner grew up around motorcycles and always had a love for them. Waggoner would see his mother and older brother ride and wanted to ride himself.
“My brother really got me into riding when I was younger,” Waggoner said.
Waggoner said his first bike was a Honda SL-10. Now, you will see Waggoner on a 2011 Harley-Davidson Street Glide. Before he bought his Street Glide, Waggoner rode a Sportster. Waggoner said he did not have a least favorite bike. Waggoner said he has loved each bike he has owned, especially the one he owns now.
Waggoner was one of the 250,000 people who gathered last year in Fayetteville, Ark., for the Bikes, Blues and BBQ Rally, where he finished the ride in just under a day.
“It is a big deal down there for the rally to take place,” Waggoner said.
After Waggoner had a family, he didn’t ride for a while. He decided to start riding again when he and a friend were hanging out. Now, Waggoner has a family full of riders. His wife rides with him almost everywhere he goes. Waggoner said his wife does not own a bike and was happy to ride on the back of his motorcycle.
“Well, she goes most times,” Waggoner said. “She will not go if it is too cold outside.”
Waggoner’s two daughters and two son-in-laws also ride. Waggoner said his son does not own a bike.
Although Waggoner is not part of a motorcycle club, he will go on the occasional poker run.
“If it is for charity — for any cause, for that matter — I will go on one,” Waggoner said.
Waggoner said he would spend every day out on his bike if he could. Waggoner is one of many in the motorcycling community who said he rides whether it is a summer day or a winter day.
“I ride no matter what,” Waggoner said. “As long as it is above 40 degrees and not snowing or icy, I will ride.”
Waggoner makes sure to keep warm if he is on his bike in the winter months. Waggoner said he has plenty of face masks and leathers to keep him warm.
Waggoner said if he goes out for the day to ride, he will not be coming home anytime soon. He rides anywhere and everywhere.
“I like to ride to different places and see new faces,” Waggoner said. “It is just amazing how the River Road has become more popular with riders.”
“I ride wherever the road takes me for the day,” he said.
