AUSTRALIA - Anti-bikies laws frustrating police

OFF THE WIRE
Police Commissioner Mal Hyde says South Australian laws allowing confiscation of proceeds of crime from bikies are hard to work with.
He says some evidence cannot be used to mount cases.
A review by former District Court judge Alan Moss found the new laws were ineffective in targeting bikies because they could not be fully utilised.
The Commissioner agrees with that view, saying police are frustrated by the difficulty in launching cases.
He hopes all will become clearer once a test case is put to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
"We're very shortly going to present something to the DPP and obviously whether he decides to proceed or not will indicate just how workable or unworkable they are," he said.
