'Dead red' motorcycle law not on Wichita's books
Posted: Jul 02, 2011 2:33 PM EDT Updated: Jul 02, 2011 2:33 PM EDT WICHITA, Kan. (AP) - A new Kansas law that allows motorcyclists to proceed through red lights that don't change quickly enough won't stop Wichita police from writing tickets for running a red light.
The law went into effect statewide Friday. It's meant to address bikers being stranded at stoplights because the motorcycles aren't heavy enough to set off sensors in the street.
The Wichita Eagle reports the law is not on the books in Wichita, where police say they'll use common sense to decide whether to cite motorcyclists who don't wait for the light to change.
Police spokesman Doug Nolte says he has experienced so-called "dead reds" while on his motorcycle. He said if he ever gets pulled over for going through a red light, he'll just hope the officer is reasonable.
