DAV: July 2011 Newsletter

OFF THE WIRE
Dear Philip,
Fireworks burst, flags wave, and patriotic songs ring through the air every year on the Fourth of July. Some of these celebrations by DAV and the local DAV Chapters are good reminders that the DAV doesn't forget about the ongoing needs of our nation’s disabled defenders.
As you help hurting heroes through the DAV today, your loyalty serves those who make freedom ring — the whole year through!
Thanking Heroes for Our Freedom!
Arthur H. Wilson, National Adjutant

DAV Volunteer Efforts = Millions in Services
DAV volunteers make a huge impact, contributing millions of dollars in service hours to the VA. But as DAV National Commander Wally Tyson points out, it’s about more than money: “DAV volunteers help us ensure that our veterans know the nation appreciates their service. They bring light into people’s lives.”
“No matter what your interests or talents may be … there’s a volunteer role you’ll enjoy,” says Commander Tyson with confidence. Visit dav.org/volunteers to learn more!

VA Secretary Reaches Out to Alaska’s Veterans  DAV applauds Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki for working to address the needs of Alaska’s 77,000 veterans. During a recent visit, the secretary got a firsthand look at the challenges of Alaska’s rural vets. He hopes telehealth technologies will improve healthcare access for veterans across the nation.

Clinic Puts Disabled Veterans Back on the Course  Sponsored by the DAV, the First Swing Golf Clinic is helping to build fuller lives for veteran amputees. Golf offers these vets an exciting physical challenge, but the clinics also renew self-confidence and foster new friendships. Says attendee Mike Sapp: “I don’t think I’ll have any trouble being active.”
VA Creates Women Veterans Call Center  The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has embarked on a major initiative to reach out to women Veterans in order to solicit their input on ways to enhance the health care services VA provides to women Veterans.  Read the article.

Salute Freedom’s Defenders!
We’re able to celebrate America’s independence this month because our disabled veterans paid for freedom with their blood. To honor their sacrifice, help rebuild their personal independence as you give $25 … $50 … $100 or more to the DAV now!
