CANADA - 18th staging of the spring Zeke Run

OFF THE WIRE
Hell's Angels Zeke Run doesn't lead to problems

An annual memorial event that normally brings dozens of Hell's Angels to Nanaimo was uncharacteristically quiet this Saturday.

The 18th staging of the spring Zeke Run occurred without incident this year, according to Nanaimo RCMP. The ride recognizes the disappearance of local club member Edward "Zeke" Mickle, who vanished in May 1993.

In previous years the ride assembled and left Nanaimo by noon from the defunct clubhouse on a round-trip to Victoria. Upon returning to Nanaimo, the bikers begin partying, but this year's ride was tame in comparison to years past.

Nanaimo RCMP were not expecting problems from the riders, but monitor the event each year.

Last year there were no major issues, and the Vancouver-based outlaw motorcycle gang unit used the event as an opportunity to photograph dozens of bikers from chapters around B.C. as they arrived to join the ride.

"Our outlaw motorcycle gang unit in Vancouver had plans to monitor the ride, but it was pretty much a non-event," Staff Sgt. Kirk Nevinson said. "Normally there are about 100 bikers, but we didn't see any until around 2 p.m., it's nothing like years gone by."

There was no explanation for the ride's poor attendance, Nevinson added.
