My personal opinion as to why the Checkpoints are tolerated is the same reason many communist principles are embraced by Americans; it has been a concerted effort to retrain friends, neighbors and children for 90 years. Many, now, see the 'checkpoint charlie, Nazi and Commie' ideals as "the answer." It's what they've been taught.
Vlad Lennin said "...the goal of Socialism is Communism."
Bernie Sanders is the Independent Jewish Senator from Vermont, but describes himself as a democratic socialist .
The Communist Party Education Workers Congress issued this explanation:

"We must create out of the younger generation a generation of Communists. We must turn children, who can be shaped like wax, into real, good Communists.... We must remove the children from the crude influence of their families. We must take them over and, to speak frankly, nationalize them. From the first days of their lives they will be under the healthy influence of Communist children's nurseries and schools. There they will grow up to be real Communists."

Doesn't that sound exactly like what we've been seeing for decades?

I never saw it so clearly as last year - my first full year of state mandated General Education college classes. Anti-Americanism and Marxism is regularly taught as the proper way to think. It is taught that being "ethical" only means knowing that you made a decision involving ethical matters; whether it was wrong or right doesn't matter.
Roseanne Barr (Borisofsky - she's Jewish, too) is only one of many that have recently come out of the closet as a Socialist/Anarchist. (Yeah, as odd as her belief in Jesus Christ while still a Jew.)
At this point Americans are so infatuated by "Hollywood" that the average person want to be just like them without knowing how almost everything about them is destructive.
