Veteran’s Family Can Keep Commemorative License Plates
SACRAMENTO - A bill by Senate Republican Leader-elect Bob Dutton (R-Rancho Cucamonga) to honor surviving family members of Purple Heart and Legion of Valor recipients passed unanimously in the Senate Transportation and Housing Committee today.
Senate Bill 1295 will allow family members of Purple Heart and Legion of Valor recipients to keep the commemorative license plates after the veteran and their spouse are deceased. Under current law, surviving members must return the special plates within 60 days after the death of the recipient or the spouse.

“It only makes sense that these special license plates have been awarded to honor the sacrifices these California veterans have made should stay with their families,” Senator Dutton said. “Rather than having the state dispose of these special license plates, this bill will allow them to remain in the family as an heirloom to honor the veteran’s distinguished service.”
Senator Dutton pointed out that existing law already allows commemorative license plates to remain with family members for those veterans who have received the Medal of Honor or were Prisoners of War.
“Veterans and their families have made some extreme sacrifices to help preserve the freedoms of this country,” Senator Dutton said. “It is an honor to carry this bill that will allow family members to keep these license plates honoring the service and sacrifices of their loved ones.”
