Can I really get a ticket for a bogus helmet?

Q: I was told that as a motorcycle rider, I have to get a helmet that is certified by code, not just any helmet, and I can get a ticket if I don't have one. Is that true?

A: Yes.

Motorcycle riders in Washington have to wear a helmet that is certified by the manufacturer as meeting the United States Department of Transportation standards outlined in 49 CFR 571.218.

The simple way to tell is if a helmet has a sticker on the back and inside showing the manufacturer name, helmet model, size and other information.

Also, a certified helmet has an inner lining usually about one inch thick made of foam, and doesn't flex as easily as the novelty helmets made of plastic, according to the State Patrol.

The State Patrol, which provided information for this answer, has a page about motorcycle helmets on its Web page here.
