New Zealand - Close eye on Poker Run

OFF THE WIRE
Despite yesterday's Red Devils raids and a beefed-up police presence, police were expecting a motorcyclists' charity Poker Run to go ahead today.
They had earlier predicted that 50 to 60 motorcycle gxxg members from around New Zealand would turn up for the run, which created headlines in 2009 as the Red Devils' first public outing.
Nelson Bays police area commander Inspector Brian McGurk said this morning that following the raids yesterday, "some of the participants and some of the motorcycles are with us".But police were still assuming that the run – which usually visits country pubs – would go ahead, and they had extra staff on to monitor it.
"It's a bit of a mystery at the moment, where it's going. As far as we're aware, none of the pubs know that they're coming."
The ride was scheduled to leave Isel Park in Stoke around noon.
Last year, about 130 people took part in the ride, including patched members from the Auckland and Whanganui Hells Angels, Timaru's Road Knights, Christchurch's Epitaph Riders and the Head Hunters.
The route included stops at the Golden Bear brewery in Mapua, the beach at Marahau, Moutere Inn and back to Kraut's at Tahunanui, where the gxxg members stayed from 5.30pm to 8.30pm. Police had to defuse a potential confrontation with Nelson's Lost Breed gang along the way.
