Legislation would allow Motorcyclists to run red lights?

ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A bill that would allow motorcyclists to treat red lights like stop signs is drawing some criticism in the Peach State.
Motorcyclists complain the loop in many lights isn't triggered when they pull up, forcing them to sit until other vehicles pull up. Albany officials showed us that the loops, what senses the metal in a vehicle, can be adjusted fairly easily to pick up motorcycles but only if they're informed the loop is off. They say it also helps when motorists stop at the white stop bars.
"The stop bars are there to let you know that that's where the loop is at a signalized intersection. If you stop behind the stop bar then that's where the signal, the lops are going to pick you up, if you drive through and cross the stop bar, that loop is going to drop you and the signal won't know that you are there," said Michelle Strickland, Albany Safe Communities.
Safety Officials worry too many motorcyclists might try to take advantage of the new law, by rolling through intersections and causing a crash. The DOT says the state has 40-thousand intersections with sensors, and an intersection like Westover Boulevard and Westgate can have as many as eleven sensors.
