Grant Helps Fund OPD Summer Motorcycle Compliance Checks
Omaha police intend to enforce the law when it comes to
motorcycle helmets, announcing Thursday the department has received a grant to
begin a special compliance check.
The Nebraska Office of Highway Safety has awarded additional
funding to provide extra officers on the streets to ensure motorcyclists are
compliant with state laws regarding motorcycle helmets.
The enforcement will run at various times and dates from June
through September, the peak motorcycle riding season. OPD reminds motorcyclists
that not only are they required to wear a helmet, but that helmet must meet U.S.
Department of Transportation standards.
Helmets found in violation of the law will be confiscated and
the rider cited.
Officers will also be looking for motor vehicle violations
that make situations dangerous for motorcycle operators, such as fail to yield,
speeding, improper lane changes, violating traffic signals, etc.
