POWAY, Calif. - Drivers in Poway will have to get used to seeing a law enforcement officer near busy intersections now that the city has installed new blue lights where red light cameras used to be.

When a traffic light turns red, a small blue light on the opposite side is illuminated. A law enforcement officer can then determine if someone entering the intersection is doing so in violation of a red light because the officer is seeing blue.

Authorities say the blue lights are cheaper than a red light camera system. Each light costs about $100, and there no additional costs for the officers, as they'll be taken from patrol or the Traffic Division.

Some drivers like Michael Henderson believe it's a good idea, adding, "Anyone could be watching you at any time."

Others like Darryl Fountain don't agree.

"Officers have more important things to do instead of sitting here watching the red light. After all, that's tax dollars," Fountain said.

The Poway City Council will decide if the blue lights should be permanent or if the red light cameras will be brought back.

The blue lights are now in place at intersections Poway Road at Pomerado Road; Poway Road at Community Road; and Scripps Poway Parkway at Pomerado Road.
