As is the case every year, the Sons of Anarchy preseason publicity blitz began last weekend at the San Diego comic book convention Comic Con. The final event of this year’s convention was a panel discussion about the next season of SOA featuring cast members Kurt Sutter, who also produces the show, his wife Katey Sagal, Charlie Hunnam, Maggie Siff, Kim Coates, Ryan Hurst, Tommy Flanagan, Mark Boone Jr., Dayton Callie, Theo Rossi and Ron Perlman.
The new season debuts September 11 on FX. The show promises more sex this year. A half minute of the seven minute preview of next season that was shown as part of the panel discussion was edited to exclude visuals of “a sex scene involving Katey Sagal and season guest star Jimmy Smits.” Comic Con officials thought the sex scene was “too explicit.” A spokesman for FX, speaking on conditions of anonymity, explained “virtually all our research including most of our focus groups indicates our target demographic probably likes sex.”
What’s Coming Up
At the conclusion of the show’s fourth season, leading man Jax, played by Charlie Hunnam, took over leadership of the Sons of Anarchy from crusty old Vietnam Vet Clay, played by Ron Perlman. Much of this season will center around whether Jax will screw up the job. Clay also loses the love Jax’ mother, played by Katey Sagal. And Jax’ mother and girlfriend, brought to life on the little to medium sized screen by actress Maggie Siff (photo above), will vie with Sagal for status and power within the club.
While his estranged wife devotes herself to wantonly pleasuring Smits’ character Nero Padilla, Perlman’s Clay will be damned to carry an oxygen tank with him wherever he goes. Expect critics to compare next season to The Myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus. Jax will continue to pour out his heart in his secret diary. And at least once next season Siff’s character, Tara, will take a bath onscreen.
Comic actor Joel McHale, who also appears on the NBC comedy Community and hosts a snarky show named The Soup on the cable channel E!, will join the biker series next season as a con man named Warren. Sutter did not reveal whether McHale will remain fully clothed during his appearances.
Sutter also hinted that a Sons of Anarchy prequel, tentatively title First Nine, is still in the pipeline. The show would center around Jax’ idealistic father, John Teller. Early episodes of SOA indicated that club founder Teller actually intended to found a hippie commune that somehow became an outlaw motorcycle club so Sutter’s take on the second term of the Nixon Administration should be breathtaking. Sutter will probably not begin work on First Nine until the conclusion of Sons of Anarchy. Sutter’s current show is expected to run for three more seasons.
