B.C. biker gang gatherings peaceful

OFF THE WIRE
Police say two biker gang gatherings in Kelowna and in Campbell River on Vancouver Island over the long weekend have so far been uneventful.

Members of B.C.'s Outlaw Motorcycle Gang Enforcement and Intelligence Unit kept a close eye on the two Hell's Angels events

RCMP Sgt. Shinder Kirk said no problems have been reported at either event.

"We know in the past that these events have gone off uneventfully," he said.

"However, there have been the odd criminal act — assaults, particularly amongst the group, but on the odd occasion involving people in the community. So our purpose there was not only to gather intelligence, but also to act as a police presence to deter any sort of criminal behavior."

Kirk said dozens of Hells Angels, including many from outside the province, converged on the cities and were expected to attend biker rides.

The police unit called in additional resources from nearby communities to ensure public safety.

The intelligence unit is made up of officers from RCMP and municipal police forces.
