OFF THE WIRE
Published by Cyril Huze
May 8th, 2012

It surprised many observers, clients and creditors that it was not done sooner, Big Bear Choppers having stopped activity in November 2011. On Friday May 4, 2012 Big Bear Choppers filed for voluntary chapter 7 bankruptcy in California Central Bankruptcy Court (Case number 6:12-bk-21113) . David Philipson of Law Office of David Philipson in Big Bear Lake, California represents BBC. Judge Wayne E. Johnson is in charge of the bankruptcy case.
More than 325 creditors are listed. It includes clients who ordered and paid in part or in full motorcycles they never received, a wide range of well known part vendors of the industry and magazines in which Big Bear Choppers used to advertise. Mona Alsop wife of BBC owner Kevin Alsop is listed among the creditors. Alsomentioned is Simon Scott  from PT Ragehard Choppers who is the owner of the company now trying to produce Big Bear motorcycles using Kevin Alsop as a free-lance designer. Full list of BBC’s creditors after the jump.

It’s a lot of creditors. It looks liket BBC, I guess during at least during 2 years, was living not paying its bills and just charging clients for services and bikes they were not able to build. Where is the legal limit between bad management and fraud. Kevin & Mona Alsop are listed as creditors! Are they asking for non-paid wages??? They must be kidding.
  2. 2 Shifter May 8th, 2012 at 8:39 am
Any idea of the total $ amount due to all these creditors?
  3. 3 smithncustom May 8th, 2012 at 8:41 am
is it any wonder. these panzy ass bikes they build have no soul and no value. 100% of the people I know who own something like this wish they would have never bought it and/or cant sell it for what the drivetrain would cost.

I met the Alsops one time. In 5 minutes, just by observing their attitude, arrogance, I knew that i would never do business with them. 100% fake. Sorry for all those listed as creditors.

Shady business, sucks for all the individuals that have been screwed by these snake oil salesmen.
  6. 6 Josh May 8th, 2012 at 10:23 am
Must add to a few millions!

So this is how it works- they appears before the trustee in BK court, the trustee looks at him and his wife and asks “are you Kevin, are you Mona?”, they both nod their heads yes, and all debts are dismissed. End of story. It will take them about 2-5 minutes to dismiss the better part of a decade of fraud.
No doubt they will go back into business doing the same thing again and people will fall for it all over again. Except this time they will have the support of some government program that will decide they are honest citizens in need of tax payer money to rebuild their lost business due to poor economic times. There will be pictures of Obama shaking their hand and appearances on Oprah congratulating them on their “never say die” American attitude, and they will be poster children for the new “Small American Business Revival Plan. ”
What happened to America? I believe we are all to blame.
It’s really not their fault. Why should they do it the hard honest way when the system would just punish them in regulations and taxes. Instead they were smart- they looked at the system and realized it is far easier to take every liberty that is freely given by the system and exploit it. Very shrewd business people.

I am suprised that it took as long as it did to file this maybe they were waiting for all the proverbial shes to drop! We all know for a fact they are trying to do it all over again jost now with a different name and address Ragehard Choppers I would hope that everyone who fell into the trap keep after them, and I hope any future potential suckers I mean customers steer so far clear of this scam. I would just hope that everyone learns from this fleecing.
Keep up the good work Cyril

Just because they filed for bankruptcy doesn’t mean they’ll get the protection.
If I were someone who was lost in this mess, I would hire a lawyer who would fight to protect my interests. It’s a shame to have to go this route, but a necessity if you want to have your rights protected.
My condolences to all involved. May justice prevail and the Alsop’s get what they deserve.
  10. 10 Brandon May 8th, 2012 at 12:35 pm
Agree with Will. It seems that BBC was operating since a long time, taking deposits knowing too well that they would not be able to deliver, during this time maybe paying themselves with the money received, not paying their bills, not starting any building. If it’s the case, IT’S FRAUD and any client could sue personally the Alsops, bankruptcy or not.
  11. 11 Down Under V-Twin Pro May 8th, 2012 at 12:44 pm
Ragehard will not sell 1 bike with the Alsops fingerprints on it, even abroad, even in Australia where I know many bikers read Cyril.
  12. 12 Rider2 May 8th, 2012 at 1:14 pm
Looks like they haven’t paid anybody for a long time… marketing, parts, dept of revenue, financial institutions etc… Whoa, that’s the way of running a company. And all they have to do is tell a judge they don’t have the money and it all goes away. Welcome to America I guess.
  13. 13 Rondo May 8th, 2012 at 1:30 pm
For me their bikes have always been Big Bullshit Choppers. Happy that they don’t produce them anymore.
  14. 14 Greek May 8th, 2012 at 1:31 pm
Kevin & Mona. Never underestimate Karma.
  15. 15 Lightnin'Larry May 8th, 2012 at 3:47 pm
Should be more like 1222 creditors, the 325 listed (minus Kevin, Mona and Simon Scott) and adding in the 900 owners that could not get the neck weld recall done on their bikes!
  16. 16 golfish May 8th, 2012 at 4:39 pm
I recall seeing one of their pickup trucks going down the 210 fwy back around 2008. It must of had 75 brand new BDL primary’s in the bed. I’m shocked their not on the list.
  17. 17 Septic the Sceptic May 8th, 2012 at 5:33 pm
Maybe BDL was smart and required cash.

Good comments by all. My only concern is where does one by a sizeable (I’m a tall American like many of us), reliable soft tail chopper these days with bling? It seems the chrome and steal forests are becoming extinct. Now you can get your plastic/composite ride with gas-o-matic cush rear-end protector, stereo sound, GPS and heated grips in any trim paint color you want as long as it is mostly black. Anyone have a good recommendation on a source for a quality basic chopper? Or have I just become a fossil?
    Thanks!
