Lake Illawarra police have arrested a man at a Unanderra unit they allege was being illegally used as a clubhouse for the Rebels outlaw motorcycle gang.
Police licensing officers, with the assistance of Wollongong City Council staff, began investigations into the property in April this year, believing it was being used in breach of its development consent.
Officers attended the Waverley St unit at 2.15am yesterday as part of the investigation, but claim they were denied access to the building.
A scuffle broke out between police and a 24-year-old man.
He was arrested at the scene, taken to Lake Illawarra police station for questioning and later charged with two counts of breaching the unit’s development consent.
‘‘Police will allege the Waverley Dr unit was being used as a clubhouse for the Rebels outlaw motorcycle gang and in breach of development consent,’’ a police statement, issued yesterday, said.
The man was granted conditional bail to appear at Wollongong Local Court on Tuesday, May 22.
Investigations into the alleged unlawful use of the premises are continuing, police said.
