DAV: April 2013 Newsletter

OFF THE WIRE
Dear Philip,

For many combat-injured veterans, the pain of war has settled over them like an immovable cloud, filling their lives with despair and gloom … drenching their souls with sorrow and hopelessness.

These heroes are desperate for the hopeful promises of spring!

Luckily, they have you to shine rays of hope through DAV. It’s important work that you do, helping heroes rediscover a bright future after war. So, as flowers bloom this spring, know that I’m thanking you for …

DAV Rescues Veteran in the Nick of Time
dav rescues veteran   When receipt of his earned benefits stalled, putting him in danger of losing his home and car, Gulf War Veteran Timothy Lake wisely turned to DAV. Racing the clock, DAV’s Douglas Wells helped expedite payment that had been hampered by new policies. “I was touched by all they [DAV] did,” says Timothy.

Answering the Call to Help Heroes Find Work
helping heroes find work   With more than 800,000 veterans looking for work and 3 million jobs unfilled in this country, there’s reason to think we can solve the problem of veteran unemployment – if we work together. That means remembering that hiring veterans isn’t just the right thing to do – it’s a major boon for any business’s bottom line.

Hearing Loss Soars Among Young Veterans
veteran hearing loss   Hearing loss is the number one disability caused by combat in today’s wars, affecting more than 59,000 troops. While VA provides excellent resources for veterans who suffer from hearing loss, the injury can still impact personal relationships. DAV’s Barry Jesinoski underscores that this “invisible disability” can be deeply frustrating for veterans.

DAV Bringing Assistance to Local Vets
MSO Greeting   DAV Mobile Service Offices are hitting the road this month. Our National Service Officers are taking their expertise to communities across the country - offering free assistance to veterans and their families. Find an MSO Stop near you.

DAVA Salutes America's Greatest Generations
america's greatest generations   From World War II to Korea, Vietnam to the Gulf War, and Afghanistan to Iraq, DAV’s Auxiliary Commander has a message of heartfelt gratitude for those she’s dubbed the Greatest Generations. That same gratitude fuels the Auxiliary’s devoted membership and proud legacy of service.

Find out how you can join the DAV Auxiliary as a way of expressing your gratitude and concern for veterans and families.

Old Glory Run Goes the Distance for Veterans
old glory run   The Minnesota DAV is proud to announce the 6th Annual Old Glory Run taking place on May 18, 2013. Launched by Chris and Pam Karls in 2007, the event has become an important way for the community to rally around local veterans. Thanks to the run, State DAV Commander Bob Erickson says that “many area veterans [are] enjoying a better quality of life.”

Volunteers Give “Sew” Much Comfort
sewing volunteers   What started as a request to clothe one amputee has grown into a nonprofit comprised of 950 volunteer seamstresses who create or adapt clothing to meet the needs of wounded veterans. See how a well-deserved grant from the DAV Charitable Service Trust is helping these seamstresses sew even more comfort for injured veterans!
