AUSTRAILIA - Police keep a close eye on Finks bikies as nine members front court over brawl

OFF THE WIRE
A LARGE police contingent converged on the Supreme Court yesterday as nine members of the Finks Motorcycle Club were re-sentenced over a violent hotel brawl.
Motorcycle police and officers from the Crime Gangs Task Force kept a close watch outside the court as the Finks and supporters entered the court for the sentencing.
Justice Trish Kelly last week upheld an appeal by the Director of Public Prosecutions over the sentences imposed over the brawl with Hells Angels members at the City Nightclub in May last year.
Justice Kelly found the sentences were "manifestly inadequate".
She ruled that one of the men - Brad Sheehy - should not have been given a suspended sentence and re-sentenced him to 18 months prison with a nine-month non-parole period.
Eight other Finks who were jailed for the affray - Peter Fotineas and Wayne McCarthy - had their existing non-parole periods extended.
Six more had the length of their suspended sentences extended, with Justice Kelly warning each that they would likely go to prison if they committed any offending while on a good behaviour bond.
In her judgment, Justice Kelly said she extended the sentences not because the men were outlaw motorcycle club members, but because they had acted as a group and the brief brawl could have led to serious injury or death.
Police continued to keep a close eye on the bikies and supporters as they left the court and pulled over a Holden Commodore driven by Finks member Andrew Majchrak - who was not involved in the brawl and was in court to support fellow club members.
Three motorcycle police and Crime Gangs officers spent about 15 minutes speaking with Majchrak on nearby Grote St and conducted a drug and alcohol test on him before allowing him to drive away.
