Motorcycle-helmet enforcement effort ends

The Omaha Police Department has wrapped up its summerlong initiative on enforcing Nebraska’s motorcycle-helmet law by issuing 977 citations over four months.
Officers targeted motorcyclists who were not wearing helmets that meet U.S. Department of Transportation standards. Violators’ helmets were confiscated and the motorcyclists were cited.
The effort was conducted between June and September, and police held 25 operations throughout the city.
Officers also targeted motor-vehicle violations that could have led to dangerous situations for motorcyclists, such as failure to yield, speeding, improper lane changes and violating traffic signals.
The Nebraska Office of Highway Safety awarded $28,901 to provide extra officers for the crackdown.
Some of the citations that were issued:
— 34 helmet violations
— 4 no motorcycle endorsements
— 736 speeding violations
— 75 restraint violations
— 20 operating during suspension violations
— 21 no proof of financial responsibilities
— 6 drug arrests
