Muffling motorcycles
Andy Ford, Portland, Maine For the Monitor January 24, 2012
The problem of widespread motorcycle noise pollution continues to increase, and people who want something done about it now have their opportunity.
Rep. Michele Peckham is the sponsor of HB 1442, which will enable New Hampshire to adopt and enforce federal noise limits. A public hearing is scheduled Feb. 7 at 10 a.m. before the transportation committee.
Many people assume that motorcycles are loud and that nothing can be done about them. However, most motorcycles made after 1982 are required to have an EPA noise compliant exhaust with a label embossed into the muffler stating such. It's the many violations of this federal law that has brought a large increase in the numbers of loud motorcycles.
Fortunately, something can be done and that includes contacting New Hampshire Citizens Against Loud Motorcycles (NHCALM) via its Facebook page or nhcalm@gmail.com.
Residents are very tired of motorcycle noise pollution, and now can do something about it.
