AUSTRALIA - Wounded bikie boss Toby Mitchell out of hospital
OFF THE WIRE
GUNNED down bikie enforcer Toby Mitchell has been released from hospital after weeks of intensive care.Mitchell, who has been romantically linked to Tony Mokbel's former de facto Danielle McGuire, was released from a city hospital last week.
But the feared Bandido sergeant-at-arms will have further surgery following complications in his recovery from liver and kidney operations.
Mitchell was shot up to five times outside Doherty's Gym, which is next door to the Bandidos clubhouse in Weston St, Brunswick. The gunmen, who used a Ford Territory, are still at large. One of the bullets hit a passing car with children inside.
A motive for the shooting is believed to be linked to heavy-handed treatment dealt out to a drug dealer in Melbourne's west but Mitchell has refused to speak to investigators.
The heavily tattooed fitness fanatic took over the role as the outlaw club's enforcer after his predecessor, Lee Undy, was jailed.
Both Mitchell and Undy were aware there lives were under threat before the hit.
Days earlier Mitchell was escorted by Federal Police at Melbourne Airport after authorities became aware he may be confronted by enemies. He refused to leave by a side exit and would not change his routine.
Mitchell has been known to police for more than a decade.
In 2003, he was questioned over the murder of drug dealer Mark Mallia. Mitchell was an associate of gangster Nik Radev, who was killed the same year.
