July Is Women's Motorcycle Month What you should know today
By Julian McKinley Email the author July 13, 2011
It used to be that women were strictly passengers when it came to motorcycles, but this is no longer the case. In fact, women now own more than 12 percent of all motorcycles on the road, which is an increase of 28 percent since 2003, according to MSN. To celebrate these women, as well as the pioneers of this hobby who were riding motorcycles long before it was fashionable, July has been designated as Women’s Motorcycle Month. For a history of women trailblazers, visit this informative link by Harley Davidson.
2. Ladies of Harley is a program sponsored by the Harley Owners Group to support women motorcycle enthusiasts - drivers and passengers alike. The group was established to encourage women to become more active in HOG and their local chapters. To join, call 1-800-CLUB HOG or visit the Ellington HOG chapter online.
3. For motorcycle enthusiasts of both genders, Thursday nights are Bike Night at TSI Harley Davidson in Ellington. Tomorrow night’s event runs from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visit TSI Harley Davidson online for more information about this fun event.
If you're looking for more fun things to do involving motorcycles, mark your calendars... This Friday and Saturday, an Antique Motorcycle Show and Swap Meet takes place at the Hebron Lions Fairgrounds.
4. On this day in history, 1930, the first World Cup soccer matches were played in Montevideo, Uruguay. France beat Mexico, 4-1, and the United States beat Belgium 3-0.
5. There's a slight chance of showers, but nothing to be worried about. Temperatures will peak in the high 80's, and skies will become partly cloudy tonight as temperatures reach a low of 61ºF, according to National Weather Service reports.
