The magic of Hollywood will mingle with the grittiness of motorcycle gangs as the FX drama Sons of Anarchy roars back to the small screen in September.
While millions of fans will be smiling (from ear to ear no doubt) the Irish eyes, not so much. The storyline for season three not has all the edgy and sometimes shocking twists and turns fans have come to know and love, but it’s going international.
All these insights and more have been making news after the cast was seen at the San Diego Comic Con as well as round of interviews with television press and critics.
Reportedly, four upcoming episodes are promised to take place in Belfast Ireland with True IRA leader Jimmy O (Titus Welliver) will appear in at least eight episodes, along with Kenny Johnson (Saving Grace and The Shield), Paula Malcomson and James Cosmo.
"Our pursuit of Abel really breaks open the world," Charlie Hunnam who famously plays the lead character, Jax told crowds and reporters about the fictitious club’s trip to Ireland, spurred by his kidnapped son.
"John Teller had a lot to do with Ireland and the origin of gun running and the Sons of Anarchy. So, it's through us going to Ireland, inevitably, we learn a little bit more" Hunnam continues discussing Jax's father and founder of the club.
But just as Kurt Sutter and the rest of the crew behind ‘Sons of Anarchy’ managed to make many of the non-riding cast appear as though they grew up in the saddle during season one, none of the stars actually filmed any of the episodes in Ireland. But just as those actors who weren’t hooked on motorcycles when they started this project are now addicted bikers, who knows where filming could actually take the cast and crew if the show continues to ride the insane road of success it has so far enjoyed.
As discussed in the pages of Clutch and Chrome previously, star of film, television and stage Hal Holbrook will be joining the cast as Gemma’s father when season three kicks off in September.
“We find out a little bit more about why a sweet girl like Gemma joined a motorcycle club," Katey Sagal explains about her character’s role in season three. While fans were introduced to Gemma as the woman who would do anything to protect her family, and of course SAMCRO, with her need to escape the law she finds herself running away from that world she so carefully built.
"I really created this role not just for [Katey], but really as a result of her and influenced by what a strong, maternal presence she has,” Kurt Sutter, the show’s creator and coincidentally husband to Sagal explained at the cast’s recent appearance, “And not that she's hittin' people with skateboards to protect my kids, but she's a pretty fierce mom."
While answering questions from the audience, Sagal admitted that Gemma not only becomes very comfortable with a gun but goes to an even angrier place.
Speaking of new places, fans of Charlie Hunnam will see the actor stretch those acting muscles with his character Jax given more material in season three with some darker directions for would-be club leaders with higher ideals.
"I think it's a darker Jax than we've seen thus far," Charlie told fans and reporters at the Comic Con.
On a lighter note, many reports have floated around since the very first scene was shot on FX’s motorcycle drama about the cast’s two-wheeled mishaps. During the recent press tour it was admitted that Tommy Flannigan (Filip "Chibs" Telford) has borne the brunt of the biker bumbling’s. It was during these recent discussions Kurt Sutter promised a season three DVD gag reel featuring nothing but Flanagan falling down.
